Sun 5/1 - Today started rotten but ended pretty good. I went out to Isla Blanka Park at the south end of SPI on the gulf side, set up and headed out with my 6m Best Nemesis and, for its first gulf experience, my Naish Custom Fish 5’2” x 17.5” surfboard with the foot straps. It didn't last long. I got the kite down in the water, could not relaunch it and ended up walking the short distance back to shore and, after rolling up the kite, back to my van which was, fortunately, only about a fifth of a mile away. It turns out it all was not my doing, as the center strut fill tube popped off and the leading edge bladder deflated, making for an unflyable kite. While at the park I took a much needed shower.
- Later, on the sound side on the North Flats, I repaired the 6m kite by reconnecting the tube, making sure the zip tie was tight. It took me about an hour to do that and to untangle the lines from this morning. Then I flew my brand new 8m Best Nemesis for the first time. That kite may be my new favorite kite. I was out on the water for about 1:30 with both boards. I got a couple pretty good jumps with the 130 cm Lite Wave Stealth twin-tip board.
- A guy stopped by my van this evening to, again, thank me for showing him how to self launch yesterday. He said he has done it several time and learning that one thing "made his trip." Now that's why I like to teach! Got to bed the latest (10:28) since I started my Kindle Challenge. Doing my monthly Blog roll-over took a lot longer than usual because I was doing two months at once (March & April) and because I didn't first take time to make a check chart of the whole process ahead of time.

Mon 5/2 - No kiteboarding today for me although it was windy. Let me explain. The day started out hot and sunny and almost no breeze with some concerns of overheating. That changed this afternoon with a strong north wind which dropped the temperature about 20 degrees. I stopped by the North Flats about 5:30pm and observed a lot of wind, no one on the water, only one vehicle and a lot of water in the usual parking areas. Good indication for catching up on my blog etc. It seemed it took forever earlier to get my blog to upload, having to go through all sorts of menus and junk on GoDaddy's website. Also I bought a new electric dual action kite pump from Air Padre. It was a little pricey at $279, but one of the guys out at the North Flats had one and said it was the best purchase he had ever made. His reason was back problems when using a hand pump. My reason is that my new Best Nemesis kites require more pressure than my little 140 pounds can accomplish with a hand pump unless I bounce on the pump again and again with my feet leaveing the ground each stroke. The new pump starts with a high-volume/low-pressure centrifugal blower and automatically switches to a low-volume/high-pressure piston pump for the finish, then automatically shuts off.
- I have gotten acquainted with Sky, the owner of Surf's Up, a big T-shirt shop. We visited this afternoon, I fixed a little wooden display stand that had broken and he gave me a couple pair of sunglasses - one specifically for my on-water kitboarding sessions. It has good UV protection, wraparound lenses that do not leave splash space on my cheeks and fit the Crokies I already have. I put super glue around the inside of the lenses to make take possible impact better. Sky also invited me to use his garden hose to give my van a much-need rinse-off.

Tue 5/3 - Tried my new kite pump today and it worked well on the two kites I used today. Shut-off settings were 4.7 psi with my 12m Cabrinha Switchblade-4 and 9.1 psi with my 8m. Best Nemesis. Today, with a northeast wind at the North Flats my first session was with the 12m and 130 cm Lite Wave Stealth twin-tip board - mostly FULLY POWERED for some awesome jumps of about 15 feet. Most of the other kiteboarders were out on 9m or smaller kites. The second session I took out the 8m and Naish Custom Fish 5’2” x 17.5” surfboard with the footstraps and made most of my jibes. In related practice for my back foot, I would touch it to my knee or touch it with my front hand. The touch was quick and not an easy feat at my stage of riding while standing only on my front foot.
- This evening I spent about $2.25 at the SPI car wash to clean the sand etc. off my engine and wash the mud caked around the wheel wells as a result of driving in the water at the North Flats. Then I drove across the Queen Isabelle Causeway to Port Isabelle for the fresh-water undercarriage rinse but that car wash was closed for repairs.

Wed 5/4 - Took my van across the 3-mile Queen Isabelle Memorial Viaduct to Dan's Auto in Port Isabelle. It took about half a day for him and his crew to secure and install actuators for the A/C fresh control and for the right rear wing window. Dan tackles jobs that my mechanics back in Phoenix don't want to touch. Also he is reliable and reasonable. I certainly recommend him.
- The hardest part for me was clearing the back so I could move the bed/couch away from the right wall. Also the third screw securing the bed was so far into the under-bed board compartment, I could not get to it except by slithering in until I couldn't slither any further then having Dan push me in the rest of the way by my feet. Of course, after I got the screw out, he had to GENTLY pull me back out by the ankles.

battery update: The battery is typically not lasting through the night with the refrigerator. Usually the
LVD
automatic Low Voltage Disconnect
activates at 11.8v around 5:30am, disconnecting all loads, including the refrigerator, but the refrigerator stays cold until I get up about 7am because it is so well insulated. Occasionally LVD will activate around 2am, in which case my refrigerator high-temperature alarm sounds before my rising time when the refrigerator reaches 48 degrees. Starting the engine and letting it idle about 10 minutes restores everything but during the charge, the cell balancing circuits are activating on cells #2 and #4 at about 13.6 volts I'm keeping track of the system and will keep you updated.
- After breakfast I organized treating someone (preferably the owner or manager) from each of the the kiteboard shops to breakfast at Pier 19. I on hand wrote and delivered the invitations to each of the three shops (XL Kites closed their SPI shop here). Spent most of the evening in Port Isabel's Doubleday Restaurant/sports bar tweaking My Favorite Talk Show Hosts on my Smart Stuff web page.

Fri 5/6 - Spent much of the day at the Port Isabelle library trying to find how to send the $100 to Alberto in Brazil, paying my two charge card bills (Capital One and Citibank Master Card) and working on an index for the Technology page of my website.
- About 4:30I did a 3.4 mile Gulf downwinder from the Pavilions to Wana Wana with my 12m Cabrinha Switchblade-4 and surf board. I caught a wave almost by accident (usual for me) and had my maximum speed so far from a wave (no kite power) at 20.1 mph.

Sat 5/7 - Two afternoon sessions today on the North Flats of Laguna Madre with my 8m Best Nemesis kite in only my swim trunks. Great to be in a warm climate. The first session I worked on spins (completed 360 degrees with some but never landed one) with my 130 cm Lite Wave Stealth twin-tip board. The second session I made most of my jibes with my Naish Custom Fish 5’2” x 17.5” surfboard with the footstraps, although I am still having difficulty getting into the rear footstrap after the jibe. Tonight I started monitoring the wind SPI forecasts for Thursday on.
- Earlier I tried to log onto iKitesurf.com and change my phone voice selections. Their website appears to have some username confusion. I emailed them about the problem (did not hear back in three days).
- In the repair/maintenance department, I replaced a bar-end bungee loop on my hybrid bar, retrieved baby sunscreen (which I use around my eyes) from my hidden stash and rerouted the power for my water works from the

Sun 5/8 - Today's first session was a 3.4 mile downwinder from the Pavilions to Wana Wana with my surf board. Only got the kite down once but got it launched OK; 17.1 mph max speed. The second session was at the North Flats on the bay (Laguna Madre). I did one good jump, worked on my spins (still not making them) and tried a back roll in each direction (port and starboard).

receiver, I planned my route driving to OBX, via the Cedar Island and Ocracoake ferries. Also I sold the carcass of my disintegrated 8m Cabrinha Switchblade-2 to Bill the kite repairman and the B in B&S kites for $10

Mon 5/9 - I tried something new today: doing 4-mile Gulf of Mexico downwinders from Harbor Blvd. to the La Quinta Hotel and taking the Wave (free mini-bus) back to my van. The two sessions saved me $12 on taxis. It was also the first time I went out on the Gulf in just my swim trunks and the first time I never got thrashed by a wave on the gulf. Both sessions were with MY 8m Best Nemesis. The first one was with my surf board. I am actually making some of my outside jibes to port. I thought I'd just take it easy on the second one and ride my twin-tip. It wasn't easier as I was underpowered and had a tendency to get the front edge of the board caught on a wave.

Tue 5/10 - My day started out windy and ended up in the emergency room at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville, TX. I spent last night parked in the Pier 19 Restaurant/Bar parking lot since I had invited someone from each of the kiteboard shops out for breakfast this morning. No one up. In fact I was the only customer at Pier 19 from 8 to 9 o'clock. I stayed around an additional hour or two updating my blog and trying, unsuccessfully, to get on the Internet to upload the update to my website. Then I went out to the Pavilions where the wind was great, to fix and eat lunch. I could have then kiteboarded on the Gulf, but NO! I had this burning desire to get on the Internet to upload my updated blog. Among other places, I drove north on the island to Surf's Up where I got online from the parking lot and got my blog updated and did more pages of the online boating class that I need to complete to help qualify for my

Professional Air Sports Association
instructor certification. The wind had diminished and I finally got in the water at the North Flats around 5:30 with my 12m Cabrinha Switchblade-4 - did some experimentation with the safety systems without a board and then went out with my 130 cm Lite Wave Stealth twin-tip board. On the way to the flats I had stopped by South Padre Island Kiteboarding and talked to them about looping the kite. Doing it wrong can really yank one around. I did all my transitions (reversing direction) with kite loops, no problems and the kite never touching the water - until the last one. The kite still did not touch the water but some how my board came off my feet and whacked me on the right shin with its edge. Got a pretty good gash. Therefore the visit to the emergency room where where the doctor installed ten stitches. I spent the night in Brownsville in a Walmart parking lot.

Wed 5/11 - Major change in travel plans - more on that later. Today I did some shopping and drove to Port Isabelle library to work on my TECHNOLOGY index and watch the Progression Advanced video from South Padre Kiteboarding. I was particularly interested in the kite loop portion. Also I iced my right shin injury a couple of times.
- I did some extensive cell-level testing on my

battery, phoned Rick of Elite Power Solutions and we determined that the battery may have a bad cell and that I needed to remove some flat washers from the cell balancers, which I did this evening out at the North Flats. Then I'll drive to OBX from Phoenix. John Harris and I arranged to do the instructor certification in July instead of starting Monday as we previously planned. This change will add three days of driving to my trip (ugh!).

  • Fri 5/13 - Drove 654.6 miles today from Junction, TX to Safford, AZ for the night. That's going west across two time zones so it was a long day. Among other things, I put in an ear bud and had my Amazon Kindle read some of The Richest Man In Babylon to me while driving.

    Sat 5/14 - Arrived home via the back roads around 11:30 am and started my check-off list (see 5/11/2010) so I can head for OBX next week.

    Sun 5/15 - Put van up on ramps and resealed the floor table socket (got wet carpet driving in HEAVY rain Thursday); registered the van online; started laundry; sorted nuts for Hatteras trip; did grocery shopping that should last until I arrive in Hatteras; Sewed T-shirt cuffs; fixed a bad connection for my van's waterworks electric pump.

    Mon 5/16 - Took van to Auto Tune & determined transmission fluid leak is from the rear seal and should not be a problem; resolved checking account; buffed van over-spray from spray paint touch-up; finished laundry; finally got my Technology Page index completed and uploaded; sanded prepped & sprayed additional touch-up a couple places on van bumper; to bed early (yea!).

    Tue 5/17 - What service from the AZ Motor Vehicle Department! I received my van registration today in the mail, having renewed it online only only two days ago, Sunday. Today I backed up images of my eeePC C: and D: drives to my Iomega 1TB USB hard drive and worked out, with my neighbors, the details of watching my yard and collecting my mail.

    Sun 5/22 - Before getting on the road I bought romaine lettuce, new windshield wiper blades (came in handy with some hail and heavy rain today) and a clear 5x10" Lexan cover for my

    in Oneida, KY about 5:30 pm. He introduced me to Jonathan and Michelle (basketball coach and his wife) and we visited with Mike, Cindy, Caleb Mieriam and Isaac Waslewski, Scott's neighbors that I have known for years. Scott and Mieriam washed my van and now it sparkles. Thanks guys! It had little black spots all over the front as if it had been driven through a cloud of oil droplets. I spent the night at Scott's place but slept in my van. It seems to work best that way because everything is there, including stuff for shaving in the morning.

    Mon 5/23 - Had breakfast with Scott and the Waslewskis, did some visiting with them, spent about two hours updating my blog through yesterday (boy am I slow!), found a shop to change my oil on my way, took a shower and headed out. Stopped by Crowe Tire Company in Hazard, KY where I had my oil changed.
    - On Scott's kitchen counter I left the customized snack tray I use this for my snacks while driving but did not realize I had left it 'til supper time and a lot of miles down the twisty mountain roads. With the aid of my

    Garmin 885-T
    receiver I found an out-of-the way Family Dollar store with an exact replacement. Pam, the manager and Samatha, her clerk, there were very helpful and we had a neat visit. It turns out that they had an orphan plastic cover that was gathering dust with no matching cake pan. Perfect! Spent the night at the Wytheville, VA Walmart.

    Tue 5/24 - Finally made it to Kitty Hawk Kites in Rodanthe, but it was not easy and I had a scare on the way. First the scare: Mike Mrovic, my neighbor back in Phoenix, phone me and said there was a giant water leak at my house and that the back yard was half flooded, my east side yard was flooded and water was running out into the street. Before I left home I had shut off the water with a ball valve I had installed just before the water enters my house, so I knew it had to be outside my house. Then I remembered that occasionally my neighbors to the east forget to turn off their back yard sprinklers which causes similar flooding. Mike checked with them and that, indeed, was what happened. Whew!
    - Several boats and several hundred autos, of which I was one, could not transverse the Alligator River bridge for about three hours because the draw bridge jammed part way open. They ended up trimming off some of the one-inch steel lip on the east approach where it was rubbing. They had to find a heavy-duty cutting torch for the project. The draw bridge portion rotates on a vertical axis.
    - I finally arrived at Waves, NC and Kitty Hawk Kites with enough time for a short 15-minute session on Pamlico Sound about sunset with my 12m Cabrinha Switchblade-4 kite and 130 cm Lite Wave Stealth twin-tip board. The wind was averaging 18 and gusting to 21 mph and I could not depower the kite properly, as I was using my hybrid bar rather than the Cabrinha IDS bar that came with the kite. Next time I use the hybrid bar with that kite, I'll attach the rear lines to a longer pigtail.

    Wed 5/25 - What an expensive session. I did well doing surface kite loops with my 14 m Cabrinha Contra on every reverse, then I crashed the kite HARD. I realized after the whole thing was over the reason it crashed so hard. Most kites, you let go of the control bar and the kite depowers almost completely so they are unlikely to crash and ,if they do, the crash is comparatively gentle. The Contra does not depower much and as a result it crashes hard, and in this case tore near the center strut from the leading edge to the trailing edge. Today's ride was the first since I spent $220 in SPI having the kite repaired from the December crash in Hawaii. Now I am in the market for a new low-wind kite. I sold the carcase to Helmut for $10 for material and parts in his kite repair business. I drove to north Avon for the night.

    Thu 5/26 - New friends and good riding from the first turnout north of Avon (my GPS waypoint HANOR1). There I met Phillip, from New York I believe, and his group. As an instructor he conducts a kite camp here every May. I joined them on two downwinders with my 8m Best Nemesis kite. The first downwinder was 2.3 miles to the what we call
    Chimichanga House
    an old U.S. Coast Guard station
    (my GPS waypoint HACOAS) and the second one was 1.4 miles to the third turnout north of Avon (my GPS waypoint HANOR3). In both cases I was the only one who made the full distance. Phillip would provide support for the group on his jet ski and then take me back on it to my van at HANOR1 where he would jump in his SUV, and retrieve the rest of the group. The first run, I made all my jibes on my Naish Custom Fish 5’2” x 17.5” surfboard with the footstraps and did a little chop hopping. The second run I mostly practiced jumps and surface transition down kite loops. I also applied what I had read and unhooked from the harness twice in each tack.
    - The waterproof band aid came off my right shin on the second run. No evidence of infection a day later.

    battery update: After nine hours in my mostly closed-up van in the sun today running the refrigerator, the cells showed 3.310 volts each, except cell #3 which was .001 volt over at 3.311v. Acceptable.

    Fri 5/27 I spent most of the morning at Ride Hatteras researching, organizing and making a chart for demoing low wind kites tomorrow at the Kite Expo.
    - During the afternoon I got low-wind recommendations at Ocean Air in Avon, Real Kitboarding in Waves, Hatteras Island Sail Shop in Waves, Best Kite's new home office in Rodanthe and at Kitty Hawk Kites, also in Rodanthe.
    - After supper I got everything set up to go out at

    on my 12m Cabrinha Switchblade-4, then noticed the right main front-line pulley was broken. I had not noticed when it evidently broke on Tuesday because I had installed safety lines around the pulleys when the same thing happened on the left pulley at South Padre Island on Thu 4/28/11. That time I ended up walking in to shore because there was no safety lines around the pulleys.
    - In the evening things were popping around

    I said, "Hi!" to John Harrass the owner; the authors/creators of Life is Good had a book signing; the Forbes Candy & Gift shop was busy; the Good Winds restaurant up stairs had live music and was full; Cabrinha set up their tent and flags and there was enough wind for kiteboarders to have some fun.

    Sat 5/28 - Today was the big Kite Expo at Kitty Hawk Kites. Lots of people, lots of vendors and lots of kites, but not in the air. Except for its gusty off-shore southeasterly direction, the low wind was an advantage for me because I wanted to demo low wind kites. I ended up riding under one of Dimetri's Epic Renegade Infinity - especially designed for low wind with only three struts. Other companies offered kites that I wanted to try out but they did not have them on hand in the big sizes for my needs and today's winds.

    races were held in the afternoon. I figured with my vast SUP experience in Hawaii that ought to give it a try. Out of a field of eight or 10, Nick crossed the finish line first and I was third but won the race. I was the only one who rounded the far buoy clockwise as per the instructions. Young buff, Nick was first to the buoy, went counterclockwise and everyone else followed him... except me.

    battery report: Having hardly even started my van today, the refrigerator drew the house battery down to 12.6 volts with the refrigerator running and about an hour of

    use. The individual cell voltages averaged 3.210 with a maximum difference of 0.013 volts between the cells.

    Sun 5/29 - Good people, good times with the Kite Expo but not good winds. I did have my first experience with a foil (ram air) kite. Before lunch Chris and Franklin let me demo their 13 m HQ Matrix foil kite. It felt quite different than the inflatable kites that I am used to. It seemed to require constant attentention to keep flying and turned very slowly. A contributing factor could have been the low winds of about 10 mph. I rode a little but ended up downwind due to the lack of it. In the afternoon I demoed Dimitri's Infinnity again. I got up an rode some, could not stay upwind because of the low wind and found it was fairly easy to relaunch in low winds. Toward evening I took a shower and cought up on some online and computer stuff while listening to the live music.

    Mon 5/30 (Memorial Day) - Although there was not a lot of wind today, I got up early and was the only one on the water at

    . It was a luxury to be able to look at my weather station and know what the wind was doing without getting out or even looking out of my van. I only stayed on the water about 35 minutes with my 12m Cabrinha Switchblade-4. I started with my 130 cm Lite Wave Stealth twin-tip board, could barely stay upwind, then switched to my Naish Custom Fish 5’2” x 17.5” surfboard with the footstraps and stayed upwind easily. It is the first time I was able to compare the two boards in pretty much identical wind conditions. During the session I covered 2.39 miles and had a top speed of 14.4 mph. The rest of the day I spent demoing kites and ended up buying one. Somehow, during the day I stepped on something sharp in the water and cut my right foot. Not bad but obnoxious.
    - I drove to north Avon for the night

    Tue 5/31 - Had my whole day choreographed to minimize walking and maximize allowing the cut on my right foot to heal. The day started with some web and computer work, shopping at Food Lion, driving to Buxton and checking out NAPA's new location, the Hot Line thrift store's new location where I donated a beefy cloth shopping bag and a wool army blanket then to Canadian Hole for the rest of the day. There I did a little sunning, jogged to the bathroom and back and then, except for a little visiting stayed in my van and off my foot. What did I do instead of trying out my new Epic Infinity low-wind kite? On my website, on my Technology web page, I added my Garmin Foretrex 201 and did two days of blogging.
    - One thing that took quite a while was backing up my D: data drive's modified files to an 32gB SD card, which I do through a DOS prompt. Sometimes Microsoft is a real pain. There was no way to turn off indexing by Windows Search 4.0 (which I NEVER use), which was using some files on the D: drive that would stop all my XCOPY backup attempts. If I ended the program through the Task Manager the program would just re-appear after about 20 seconds. The system would not let me delete the pesky files. I had been through all this before and never found a solution. The solution that occurred to me, and finally worked, was to uninstall Windows Search 4.0. Now when I search, I get the Windows Search Companion, which is what I always want in the first place.
    - For about a year I have been wanting to check out the wave form of the little cigarette-lighter 110V AC inverter that I use here in my van. Finally got my virtual oscilloscope going and hooked it up to the inverter. The wave form is not quite as refined as I had expected. The AC is a DC square wave with pauses between the positive and negative.

    since Rick rebalanced the cells. I'm not surprised, considering the refrigerator was running and I used my computer almost all day with little engine running to charge the battery. Spending the night in North Avon.
